Thermostat

The thermostat in a car sits between the engine and the radiator, working to help regulate the flow of the coolant from the radiator to the engine to prevent it from overheating. The thermostat turns the flow of coolant on and off depending on the temperature of the engine. When the engine is cold it closes the valve, and when it is sufficiently warm it allows the coolant to flow and dissipate heat. When the thermostat malfunctions, the engine will either overheat or not get sufficent heat to function properly. Other symptoms that the original thermostat is failing include erratic temperature readings. You might see the temperature jump into the red zone within fifteen minutes of starting the car, or might see it read too low. You can also check to see if there is any leaking coolant around the thermostat housing or underneath your vehicle.
